Pulse on the Nation's Nurses Survey Series Results
The American Nurses Foundation and the American Nurses Association launched the Pulse on the Nation's Nurses Survey Series in 2020. Since then, ANF has tracked mental health and well-being sentiments and needs of nurses through a series of surveys. Designed to capture "moment in time" responses, these digital surveys are open to all nurses in the United States, without limitation by specialty, work setting, age, or tenure in the profession. Results are shared publicly to inform the development of responsive philanthropy and programs to help shape further research and guide advocacy efforts.

Pulse of the Nation's Nurses: Multigenerational Nurse Experience Survey (October 2023)
The American Nurses Foundation conducted this survey to determine the how different generations of nurses engage and interact with each other as well as understanding what is important to nurses of various generations of nurses. This survey builds upon past surveys and includes questions on understanding how nurses feel when working with each other, likeliness of leaving their role, and understanding what may keep nurses practicing in their role longer. 5,772 nurses completed the survey between September 25-October 24, 2023.
Pulse of the Nation's Nurses: Mental Health and Wellness Survey (May, 2023)
As a follow-up to the American Nurses Foundation's first three Mental Health and Wellness surveys completed in summer 2020, December 2020, September 2021, the Foundation conducted this survey to determine the changes and further impact on the mental health and wellness of nurses, with additional enquiries concerning stress and burnout. 7,419 nurses completed the survey between April 24 -May 26, 2023.
Pulse of the Nation's Nurses: Workplace Survey (July 2022)
The American Nurses Foundation conducted this survey to determine the impact of the workplace on nurses. This survey builds upon past surveys and includes questions on healthy work environment, mental health and well-being, perceived organizational support, and intent to leave direct patient care. 11,863 nurses completed the survey between June 15 – July 5, 2022.
Pulse of the Nation's Nurses: Mental Health and Wellness Survey (September, 2021)
As a follow-up to the American Nurses Foundation's first two Mental Health and Wellness surveys completed in summer 2020 and December 2020, the Foundation conducted this survey to determine the changes and further impact of the pandemic on the mental health and wellness of nurses, with additional enquiries concerning emotional health, post-traumatic stress, resiliency, and stigma around seeking professional mental health support. 9,572 nurses completed the survey between August 20 - September 2, 2021.
Pulse of the Nation's Nurses: Mental Health and Wellness Survey (December, 2020)
As a follow up to the American Nurses Foundation’s first Mental Health and Wellness survey completed in the summer of 2020, the American Nurses Foundation conducted a second survey of 12,881 nurses between December 4-30, 2020. This survey examined the ongoing impact the pandemic is having on the mental well-being of nurses.
Pulse of the Nation's Nurses: Mental Health and Wellness Survey (June, 2020)
This survey by the American Nurses Foundation focused on mental health and wellness, to gather insights and experiences of nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic. Between June 5 – July 6, 2020, there were 10,997 nurses who shared how the pandemic impacted their mental health and wellness.
