Standards for Integrity and Independence in Accredited Continuing Education
The NCPD Individual Activity Toolkit includes additional resources to help your organization transition to the new Standards for Integrity and Independence in Accredited Continuing Education.
Standards for Integrity and Independence in Accredited Continuing Education was designed to ensure that accredited continuing education serves the needs of patients and the public, is based on valid content, and is free from commercial influence. The Standards were released in December 2020, replacing Standards for Commercial Support: Standards to Ensure Independence in CME Activities.
The Standards reflect the values of the continuing education community and have been adopted by accrediting bodies representing multiple health care professions. Independence from industry is the cornerstone of accredited continuing education. By achieving consensus on the Standards, these accrediting bodies in the health care professions stand together, not only to continue to assure the delivery of high-quality learning experiences, but also to sustain the protection from industry bias and marketing that accreditation rules deliver:
- Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME)
- Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE)
- American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP)
- American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)
- Association of Regulatory Boards of Optometry’s Council on Optometric Practitioner Education (ARBO/COPE)
- Joint Accreditation for Interprofessional Continuing Education™
The resources in this toolkit are focused on Standard 1: Ensure Content Is Valid and Standard 3: Identify, Mitigate, and Disclose Relevant Financial Relationships. These two standards are applicable to all accredited providers.
Download the toolkit now to receive resources including worksheets, templates, and sample letters to assist in your organization’s transition to the new Standards.
