SILVER SPRING, MD – The National Commission to Address Racism in Nursing is partnering with DNPs of Color and Nurses You Should Know this Black History Month to launch The Black Angels Book Club Event. The six-week virtual event series kicks off on February 3rd and invites participants to explore Maria Smilios’ book The Black Angels: The Untold Story of the Nurses Who Helped Cure Tuberculosis. Through weekly discussion, attendees will learn more about the courageous Black nurses who were a part of the cure for tuberculosis as well as the desegregation of the New York City hospital system.
This series will bring awareness to these historic Black nurses who were part of a galvanizing moment in global history, the cure for tuberculosis, and who, until last year, had been completely erased from history.
Attendees will have the opportunity to:
- Learn about these trailblazing Black nurses and gain understanding of the systemic racism that permeated the profession of nursing in the early to mid-20th century.
- Hear from the last living Black Angel Virginia Allen among other renowned speakers.
- Have access to guiding reading questions as well as an asynchronous online curriculum that includes resources from the authors, supplemental readings, and other relevant content.
“We are excited to have spearheaded this national book club with Nurses You Should Know and Maria Smilios in collaboration with the Commission and so many others," stated Danielle McCamey, Founder, CEO, & President, DNPs of Color. "Ms. Virginia Allen entrusted us with the mission of ensuring that as many nurses as possible read this book, learn about, and discover the extraordinary lives and legacies of the Black Angel nurses, solidifying their rightful place in history.”
