SILVER SPRING, MD – Today, elected officials in Congress introduced a bipartisan, bicameral resolution supporting the goals and ideals of National Nurses Week to be observed from May 6-12, 2024. ANA is pleased to see this action by members of Congress to acknowledge the importance of National Nurses Week to recognize the contributions of nurses and encourage the people of the United States to observe the week in their communities.

“The celebration of National Nurses Week has been fully established by ANA for over 30 years, and it is important for us all to continue to push for this necessary time of recognition to be observed at a national scale.” said ANA President Jennifer Mensik Kennedy, PhD, MBA, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN. “These past few years have taken a toll on nurses, and Nurses Week is a time where communities, made up of nurses, health care professionals, employers, community leaders and the public, can come together for the common purpose of celebrating the contributions of nurses.”

ANA supports and encourages National Nurses Week recognition programs through our constituent and state nurses associations, specialty nursing organizations, educational facilities, and independent health care companies and institutions.

“Nurses Week is a special time with ANA. We live and breathe nursing everyday, but this designated time of recognition and awareness brings all members of a community together,” said ANA Chief Nursing Officer Debbie Hatmaker, PhD, RN, FAAN. “ANA is grateful to have the support of our federal elected officials who are bringing awareness of how crucial this time of observance is as we work to continue the support and advancement of the nursing profession.”

ANA is grateful for the resolution introduction and to members of Congress Reps. David Joyce (R-OH), Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR), Jen Kiggans (R-VA), and Lauren Underwood (D-IL) as well as Senators Jeff Merkley (D-OR) and Roger Wicker (R-MS) for their support in doing so.
