SILVER SPRING, MD— In response to the persistent challenge of nurse shortages, the Commission on Magnet® supported by the ANA Enterprise Institute for Nursing Research and Quality Management is now embarking on an exhaustive review of the Magnet Model to assess its current evidence base, standards, and to identify emerging evidence necessitating updates. The ultimate goal is to enhance the Magnet Model by aligning it with contemporary evidence, ensuring its global relevance, and discovering new elements that contribute to the improved care for patients and supportive practice environments for nurses and care teams.
The original research was conducted by the American Academy of Nursing's Governing Council, which established a task force in 1981 to investigate factors shaping professional nursing practice in hospitals. This task force identified 14 characteristics, referred to as the 14 Forces of Magnetism, which were later consolidated into a comprehensive Magnet Model in 2008. The Magnet Model, currently organized into five domains, serves as a framework to attract and retain professional nurses and improve outcomes for patients.
“The investment in the Magnet Model review is a significant step toward contemporizing its framework with the latest evidence, building a robust, relevant, and culturally sensitive model,” notes Rebecca Graystone, PhD, MBA, RN, NE-BC, Senior Vice President, Accreditation and Organization Credentialing. “We are delighted to partner with Dr. Patrician and Dr. Clarke in this latest model review which will impact the future of Magnet in the next generation.”
Following a call for research proposals and a meticulous independent review involving external evaluators and an expert panel, the decision to lead this vital initiative has been entrusted to:
- Patricia A. Patrician, PhD, RN, FAAN, Professor and Rachel Z. Booth Endowed Chair in Nursing, University of Alabama at Birmingham, and Co-Director VA Quality Scholars Fellowship Program
- Sean Clarke, PhD, RN, FAAN, Ursula Springer Professor in Nursing Leadership and Executive Vice Dean, New York University Rory Meyers College of Nursing, and Editor-in-Chief, Nursing Outlook
The current review is centered around five critical themes:
- Patient Outcomes: Evaluating variables impacting patient outcomes and determining their consistency across domestic and international healthcare organizations.
- Work Environment: Identifying variables affecting the work environment for nurses and assessing their global consistency.
- Nurse Engagement: Analyzing variables influencing the engagement of professional nurses and exploring whether these variables are universally applicable or context dependent.
- Quality: Examining whether the identified variables contribute to overall healthcare value in terms of quality and cost.
- Current Environment: Assessing how variables address wellness, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (DEIJ), and adapt to the changing healthcare landscape.
Project: Towards Magnet 3.0: A Systematic Literature Review and Mixed Methods Study
The project aims to:
- Conduct a comprehensive literature review of Magnet hospitals over the past two decades, specifically focusing on the Magnet Model components.
- Identify organizational and nursing factors influencing work environment, nurse engagement, retention, and their impact on patient outcomes and value.
- Recognize and assess factors like nurse wellness, DEIJ, justice, and the dynamic healthcare landscape in connection with the Magnet Model components.
- Validate findings through electronic surveys and individual interviews with key stakeholders in Magnet and Magnet-Aspiring hospitals.
Sharon Pappas, PhD, RN, FAAN, Chair of the Commission on Magnet (COM), adds, "The Commission on Magnet is pleased to entrust the study of the Model to these accomplished researchers. Magnet's distinction of continued grounding in research makes this recognition for nursing excellence highly coveted globally."
