Silver Spring, MD - On April 16, 2024, the American Nurses Association (ANA) Enterprise Institute for Nursing Research and Quality Management spearheaded the groundbreaking "Re-Imagining the Economic Value of Nursing" Summit. The event convened a diverse array of experts and policy influencers to chart a visionary path toward recognizing, measuring, and leveraging the economic value of nursing within the complexities of the US healthcare system.
“At the ANA Enterprise, we recognize nurses' value for their profound impact on the profession and broader society. However, it is crucial to acknowledge nurses for their vital role in revenue generation, delivering cost-effective care, and achieving high-quality patient outcomes. Reinvestment in nursing is paramount for cultivating a stronger and more resilient nursing workforce,” said ANA Acting Chief Executive Officer and Chief Nursing Officer Debbie Hatmaker, PhD, RN, FAAN.
The summit marked a major milestone in the two-year Economic Value of Nursing Research Project, aimed at creating and testing a conceptual model for the Economic Value of Nursing. Its outcomes are expected to greatly influence nursing workforce policy, compensation structures, and the profession's growth.
Led by internationally recognized nursing research authorities, Dr. Olga Yakusheva and Dr. Marianne Weiss, the commissioned project seeks to increase the visibility of nursing's significant contribution to the global healthcare economy. The project aims to shift the paradigm, positioning nursing not merely as a labor cost but as a crucial revenue-generator within healthcare systems. In Dr. Yakusheva words, “Nurses are the core service of the healthcare system—much of our healthcare infrastructure would not be possible without them. Patients seek out hospitals and healthcare facilities primarily for nursing care."
The summit included discussions on strategically advancing research efforts to enhance the visibility and impact of nurses' economic value to health care systems, payors, and the public. Additional conversations focused on developing new methodologies to measure nursing's economic value and the advantages of investing in nursing, informing future research and bolstering the profession's growth. This high-level summit will create the impetus for leveraging nursing’s economic value in support of the nursing profession.
