SILVER SPRING, MD —Today, the American Nurses Foundation (the Foundation) announced a request for proposals (RFP) for the next phase of funding for its flagship program, the Reimaging Nursing Initiative. A total of $2 million in grant funding will be distributed over the course of two years to select nurse-led teams and the current Reimagining Nursing Initiative grantees across all practice settings with a particular focus on the patient care journey. The RFP submission portal is now open with a national informational session on November 7, at 2 p.m. EST.

This second phase of funding seeks to continue the momentum initiated by the Reimagining Nursing Initiative’s first round of nurse-led pilot programs to support solutions which positively transform health care through the adoption of approaches, tools, and practices that improve access, quality care, and positive patient outcomes. The grant will support nurse-led research and promote health equity and nurse well-being. With this in mind, grantees will be solicited to examine the intersection of the program’s three areas of focus including nursing education, direct reimbursement, and nurse-driven technology in order to scale and implement effective nurse-led solutions. There will be two funding categories:

  1. Reimagining Practice Settings. Accepting proposals centered on the patient care journey. A total of $1.5 million is available to nurse-led teams or nurse-led interdisciplinary teams.
  2. Reimagining Areas of Synergies Between Education, Technology, and Direct Reimbursement. Only accepting proposals from current grantees. There is either one grant at $500,000 or two grants of $250,000 for a grantee-led interdisciplinary team.

“We are excited for this next wave of grant recipients to bring their fresh, new ideas to life and extend the amazing work already started within the first phase of the Reimagining Nursing Initiative,” said Adriane K. Griffen, DrPH, MPH, MCHES®, Interim Executive Director and Vice President of Programs at the Foundation. “The strides that we are making across all of our pilot programs in an effort to transform health care for the better will build capacity, and support taking nurse-led ideas to scale, as well as open the door for interprofessional learning collaboratives. The Foundation is truly thankful for the generous support of the Kaiser Permanente National Community Benefit Fund at East Bay Community Foundation.”

The 10 grantees within the first phase of the program span 31 states, including 54 pilot sites. The second phase of the Reimagining Nursing Initiative will be heavily focused on preparing for a future that inspires interprofessional networking and collaboration across industries and sectors to realize a healthy world by ensuring the success of nurses and valuing their contributions. The data and information gathered from the Foundation’s current pilot programs will serve as the base for the expansion of the Reimagining Nursing Initiative into this second phase.

“We are honored to partner with the American Nurses Foundation to support the development of this impactful initiative,” said Kaiser Permanente’s Chief Nurse Executive Phyllis Doulaveris, DNP, RN, NEA-BC, CPHQ. “We have long held that nurses are in a unique position to lead transformation in health care. We believe this initiative will continue to make a difference in patient’s lives as well as improve access, care, and health outcomes and look forward to the second phase.”

The proposals for this second phase of grant funding are due on January 10, 2025 at 4 p.m. EST via the Foundation’s Submission Portal. The proposals are evaluated by a special review committee facilitated by the Foundation.
