SILVER SPRING, MD – The National Commission to Address Racism in Nursing (the Commission) and the American Nurses Association (ANA) are proud to return as co-sponsors for the Equity-Minded Nurse Awards as part of the AARP Center for Health Equity through NursingSM and the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action.
Recognizing nurses who are helping lead the way to health equity through practice, education, research, or leadership, the winners will be recognized before an audience of national nursing leaders and educators at Coppin State University on September 10. All equity-minded nurse award winners will also become part of the Campaign for Action’s Health Equity Hall of Fame.
The Commission and ANA are co-sponsors of The Equity-Minded Practice Award, recognizing a nurse whose work with patients, families and/or communities exemplifies efforts to reduce health disparities and advance health equity. These efforts demonstrate potential for impact and serve as a best or promising practice.
“It is the Commission and ANA’s distinct privilege and honor to return as a co-sponsor of the Equity Minded Nurse Awards and stand amongst other sponsors who are making the important investment in this incredible and urgent work,” said Commission Ex Officio and ANA President Jennifer Mensik Kennedy , PhD, MBA, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN . “Now more than ever, it is crucial to elevate the initiatives and individuals who are positively impacting their community by starting a chain reaction of transformation for their patients and communities.”
A national survey of over 5,600 nurses conducted by the Commission show that racism is an insidious problem within the profession. Earlier this year, the Commission, with support provided by ANA, distributed funds to ten extraordinary nursing programs and organizations committed to eliminating racism in nursing. The selected recipients and their respective evidence-based initiatives range anywhere from student education to patient care to workplace training.
“As part of ANA’s racial reckoning and our partnership with The National Commission to Address Racism in Nursing, it is imperative to provide not only support to the practical work being done to create an antiracist profession but to champion the nurses that are leading the charge in their workplace setting and community,” said ANA Chief Nursing Officer and Acting CEO Debbie Hatmaker, PhD, RN, FAAN.
The deadline for self applications and nominations for the 2024 Equity-Minded Nurse Awards Program is April 30. To learn more about the award categories and submit an application, please visit the Campaign for Action website for more information.
