SILVER SPRING, MD—The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) announced today that Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater, Florida is the recipient of the 2023 ANCC Pathway Award®. The award, sponsored by Press Ganey, was presented at the co-located 2023 ANCC National Magnet Conference® and the ANCC Pathway to Excellence Conference® in Chicago. It honors a project proposal in a Pathway to Excellence®-designated organization that fosters a positive nurse practice environment using innovation and technology.

Morton Plant Hospital, a Press Ganey client, will use the $100,000 award to develop its winning proposal, Virtual Nurse, and report outcomes at next year’s Pathway to Excellence Conference®.

“On behalf of all our team members, I am honored that Morton Plant Hospital has been selected as the recipient of the 2023 ANCC Pathway Award for our Virtual Nurse program,” said Jen Ransford, Vice President/Chief Nursing Officer for BayCare’s West Region. “Virtual Nurse is one more example of how BayCare is looking to improve patient care and streamline workload for clinical teams. Patients have told us they appreciate the undivided attention they receive.”

Virtual Nurse was created to improve health care experiences and outcomes for both patients and nurses. It aims to reduce administrative tasks for bedside Registered Nurses (RNs) by 2 hours, improve nursing job satisfaction and retention, and enhance patient experiences and safety among other benefits. This innovation, which supplements RN bedside care delivery across 11 units in a 599-bed acute care hospital in Florida, is designed to be replicated nationally. Under this model, Virtual Nurses (VNs) assume primary responsibility for discharge-related administrative tasks and patient education using technology to complete these tasks remotely in an environment minimizing interruptions. Patients, VNs, and other care team members will utilize technology to communicate and collaborate from admission through discharge.

"Congratulations to Morton Plant Hospital for being honored with the 2023 ANCC Pathway Award!” said Jeff Doucette, DNP, RN, NEA-BC, FACHE, FAAN, Chief Nursing Officer, Press Ganey. “This recognition is a testament to the hospital’s commitment to fostering a positive nurse practice environment through innovation and technology. At Press Ganey, we are proud to sponsor this award that celebrates projects like Virtual Nurse, which are designed to improve both the health care experience for patients and the work environment for nurses. This innovative care model has the potential to make a significant impact, not only at Morton Plant Hospital but also on a national scale. We look forward to seeing the outcomes and the potential replication of this model in health care organizations across the country. Well done, Morton Plant Hospital!"

“This innovative care model could not be more timely or necessary as nurses everywhere are facing increased workloads and higher numbers of patients,” said Rebecca Graystone, PhD, MBA, RN, NE-BC, Senior Vice President, Accreditation & Organization Credentialing. “For this reason, ANCC is delighted to confer the Pathway Award® to Morton Plant Hospital for Virtual Nurse.”
