Cohen Children's Medical Center Receives 2020 ANCC Magnet Prize®
SILVER SPRING, MD —The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) is proud to announce that Cohen Children's Medical Center in New Hyde Park, NY, is the recipient of the 2020 ANCC Magnet Prize®, sponsored by Cerner Corporation, a global health platform and innovation company. The recipients were recognized during the 2021 ANCC National Awards Virtual Event on May 14, 2021. A recording of the broadcast is available to view here.
The ANCC Magnet Prize®, sponsored by Cerner, honors innovative nursing programs and practices in ANCC Magnet® designated organizations. Cerner supports these programs and practices by sponsoring the $75,000 purse attached to the Prize. Cohen Children's Medical Center is using the prize to further develop its winning proposal: BEE MINDFUL™ – A Program for Children with Special Needs – Creating a Safe Haven Across the Continuum of Care.
The BEE MINDFUL™ Program was designed to meet the needs of children with special needs, including Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, and behavioral/sensory issues. The Program is comprised of a validated assessment and intervention tool, a visual symbol, education, and a coordination of care model. This nurse led interprofessional initiative empowers individuals with special needs and their families to guide the personalization of care through the universal voice of the BEE MINDFUL™ symbol and associated Program to ensure continuity of care. Prior to BEE MINDFUL™ Program, Cohen Children's had no standardized protocol to care for children with special needs. The Pediatric Neurobehavioral Assessment tool (PNAT) is a unique, nurse centric tool that is completed upon arrival and drives subsequent care. It is a content expert validated tool that partners the patient and family with nursing to individualize care. This unique PNAT assessment tool fulfills the gap or absence of a national standard assessment and intervention tool available for use with this population. The tool allows for a universal communication among caregivers and facilities. The distinctive BEE MINDFUL™ symbol is displayed at the entrance of the organization and other key locations to act as a “fast pass” to allow families to bypass lines and receive immediate support. The symbol is also displayed outside the patients’ rooms, providing situational awareness to all team members before entering the child’s safe space to prevent potential triggers or events.
Prior to the BEE MINDFUL™ Program, the Average Length of Stay (ALOS) for special needs pediatric patients based on identified ICD-10 codes at the organization was 4.5 days, greater than the national average of 3.5. After the first year of implementation, special needs pediatric patient ALOS decreased to 2.3 days and was sustained for two years. This decrease yielded a savings of $1.5M annually. Most importantly, since inception of the program, patient experience and satisfaction scores improved post initiation. Pre-implementation, data for the survey question, “Staff addressing personal issues?” was at 86%. Post-implementation it was 90.3%, representing a 4.3% increase. In 2018, the question “Nurses listen carefully to your child?” was utilized and continued improvement was seen, with a 5.4% increase, which is above the national database benchmark.
The BEE MINDFUL™ Program has shown sustainability, successfully spreading to five institutions and multiple ambulatory settings within the organization over three years. In addition, this nurse centric interprofessional program was designed to be translatable to adult care settings and was successfully implemented in an adult emergency department. The next phase is to expand beyond the organizational footprint for implementation on a national scale.
