SILVER SPRING, MD – The American Nurses Association (ANA) is pleased the United States Supreme Court ruled 7-2 that the plaintiffs did not have standing to challenge the Affordable Care Act (ACA). This decision means the ACA and its protections for preexisting conditions remain intact and ensures that millions of Americans have health care coverage and access to the health care services that they seek.
“While ANA applauds this ruling, it does not mean a similar lawsuit cannot overturn the ACA from a plaintiff with standing. We call on the Administration to build on the ACA to improve access to health care coverage. We will continue our decade long support of the ACA,” said ANA President Ernest J. Grant, PhD, RN, FAAN. “Given the anticipated enduring health impacts from COVID-19 as well as the increased demand for health care services, all burdens and barriers that impede access to affordable health insurance coverage must be eradicated. This is especially urgent for vulnerable individuals, populations and communities that have experienced disproportionate suffering and who must have access to affordable health insurance coverage and to high-quality patient care.”
Through its advocacy, ANA has raised its voice consistently to advocate for the goals and key provisions of the ACA to ensure access to health care for millions of Americans. ANA will continue to advocate and defend access to health care delivery, coverage, and affordability for all.
