ANA Responds to Supreme Court Ruling on DACA

SILVER SPRING, MD  – In a 5-4 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court today blocked the Trump administration’s attempt to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. This ruling concludes that the administration violated the Administrative Procedures Act when terminating the program, and therefore DACA remains in effect.

The American Nurses Association (ANA) applauds this decision which protects nearly 700,000 people known as “Dreamers” from deportation and allows them to work or study in the United States. Nurses have a commitment to address injustices and to advocate for social justice. The Code of Ethics for Nurses calls on nurses to preserve the human rights of vulnerable groups, such as children, women and refugees. ANA opposes any action and/or policy that erodes the protection of human rights, equality and dignity.

ANA signed on to an amicus brief (appendix) in the consolidated DACA cases, alongside the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and dozens more children’s advocacy organizations, medical professionals, and child development experts.
