SILVER SPRING, MD – The American Nurses Association (ANA) is appalled to hear of the alarming allegations at the Irwin County Detention Center related to high rates of hysterectomies performed on immigrant women under U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody. Oppression or exploitation of any population is of grave concern for nurses, especially for those whose human rights may be more easily violated. The Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements obligates nurses, without exception, to diligently protect and promote human rights. All nursing practice in all settings is grounded in respect for the inherent dignity, worth, unique attributes, and human rights of all individuals. ANA advocates for the provision of safe and high-quality sexual and reproductive health care for all women without undue influence or coercion. We strongly recommend a thorough and timely investigation into these troubling allegations.
ANA supports the statements of American College of Nurse-Midwives Statement from the American College of Nurse-Midwives Regarding Complaints of Unwarranted Hysterectomies Performed Without Consent at ICE Facilities
