Professor Sheila D. Tlou Wins the 2018 HRH Princess Muna Al Hussein Award
SILVER SPRING, MD—The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) today presented Professor Sheila D. Tlou, PhD, RN, FAAN, with the prestigious HRH Princess Muna Al Hussein Award for her more than 30 years of impassioned advocacy for nursing and healthcare across the globe. The award was given at the ANCC National Magnet Conference® in Denver.
“Dr. Tlou’s rich background as an educator, executive leader, researcher, and advocate for nursing and vulnerable patients has advanced international standards of excellence in the nursing profession and the healthcare field,” said ANCC President Patricia Reid Ponte, DNSc, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN. “We are honored to present her with this esteemed award.”
Dr. Tlou is best known for her pioneering work leading the AIDS response in Africa. She is a former Member of Parliament and Minister of Health in Botswana, where she developed a comprehensive HIV prevention, treatment, care, and support program that remains the model to this day. Her distinguished career includes seven years as director of the UNAIDS Regional Support Team for Eastern and Southern Africa, Professor of Nursing at the University of Botswana and Director of the World Health Organization’s Collaborating Centre for Nursing and Midwifery Development in Primary Health Care for Anglophone Africa.
Professor Tlou currently chairs the Global HIV Prevention Coalition, an international consortium working to set a common agenda for HIV prevention. In addition, she co-chairs the Nursing Now Global Campaign to raise the status of nursing and empower nurses to tackle today’s most pressing health challenges.
She holds a PhD in Nursing Sciences and post-graduate certificates in Women’s Health and Gender Studies from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She has a Master’s degree in Nursing Education and Instruction from Columbia University and an MSN from the Catholic University of America. In 2017, Professor Tlou received the illustrious Christiane Reimann Prize from the International Council of Nurses for her outstanding influence on the nursing profession.
The HRH Princess Muna Al Hussein Award recognizes significant contributions to healthcare across borders and a dedication to nursing. It is named for Her Royal Highness Princess Muna Al Hussein of Jordan and represents her deep commitment to the advancement of nursing in Jordan and around the globe. With a focus on education, scholarship, ongoing training, and professional development, HRH Princess Muna champions nursing and strengthens the health care workforce worldwide.
