Every nurse practicing today encounters ethical questions or dilemmas. Where should you turn to help navigate ethical issues? This course will guide you in finding answers to the many perplexing ethical quandaries you may encounter. You will:
- Gain an understanding of the ANA Code of Ethics and how to apply it to your nursing practice
- Hear experts in Nursing Ethics discuss aspects of the ANA Code of Ethics.
- Assess ethical dilemma scenarios
- Decide on a course of action using case studies
- Apply knowledge gained to situations you encounter on the job

Margaret Hegge, EdD, MS, RN, FAAN
Dr. Marge Hegge is Distinguished Professor Emeritus State University, College of Nursing, South Dakota. She served 8 years on the ANA Ethics Advisory Board, the last 4 as the chair. Most recently she served as Chair of the Steering Committee to revise the ANA Code of Ethics. She has designed and taught doctoral level nursing ethics courses and is committed to ethical nursing practice.
Liz Stokes, JD, MA, RN
Ms. Liz Stokes is a Senior Policy Advisor for the American Nurses Association Center for Ethics and Human Rights. She worked as a Consultant for the D.C. Board of Nursing interpreting and conferring professional ethics provisions in nursing. She recently completed her Masters in Bioethics from Loyola University Chicago. She is a member of The American Association of Nurse Attorneys and serves on the board of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities Affinity Group for Nursing. Ms. Stokes also serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Bioethical Inquiry and is an active volunteer with the District of Columbia Bar Association. She is currently an American Academy of Nursing Jonas Health Policy Scholar.
Lucia Wocial PhD RN, FAAN
Dr. Lucia Wocial’s current clinical practice is ethics. She is the nurse ethicist and program leader in Nursing Ethics for the Fairbanks Center for Medical Ethics (FCME) at Indiana University Health in Indianapolis, Indiana. She has led the Unit Based Ethics Conversation (UBEC) program through FCME for the past ten years. She is a faculty mentor for the clinical ethics fellowship at FCME. She co-chairs the ethics consultation service sub-committee and is an active member of the ethics consultation service at Indiana University Health in Indianapolis. She served on the ANA task force that revised the Code of Ethics for Nurses in 2015.
