Overview

You and your team have probably experienced something similar at work:

  • A fellow nurse starts calling out because your unit has become so stressful that they are overwhelmed by anxiety.
  • A colleague's performance and patient care begins to decline. You learn later that their spouse has recently been laid off.
  • There's an increase in patient load. Your friend, one of the best nurses you know, exhibits personality changes that negatively affect their work relationships.

These scenarios represent the physical and psychological symptoms from the sustained stresses of nursing, making overall health and wellness for teams more elusive. This impact on the overall health of the nurse has a ripple-effect that directly impacts the health of the patients, the profession, the health care systems, and ultimately the nation. Burnout in these situations is not the fault of individual nurses.

The Nurse Well-Being: Building Peer and Leadership Support Program is the initial step to providing support and care to nurses. Using concepts from the Stress First Aid peer support model, you will learn how to adopt a common language to discuss mental health and implement techniques to reduce the impact of stress injuries. Participants like you will gain skills for navigating difficult conversations with a peer and identify local resources for additional mental health and well-being support.

This core program curriculum is appropriate for nurses at all stages of their career, especially for those currently in clinical settings.

Key Learning Outcomes

  1. Identify early signs and symptoms of stress and burnout, both personally and professionally.
  2. Demonstrate effective strategies for managing and mitigating stress and burnout.
