My primary career was as a full scope midwife. Like many others, my professional and personal life has taken different roads, a few far off the more common path. But that is what’s great about nursing, isn’t it? We are part of so many facets of healthcare delivery and we have the potential to impact others as individuals, communities, societies, even globally.
No matter what area of practice, clinical, academic, or entrepreneur my primary goal remains to be in service of others. The shift from women’s health to community health was prompted by a deeper understanding of our global needs for the aging population as I was earning my doctorate. Concurrently, I witnessed the rapid decline of the first nurse I ever knew. Elizabeth Kiselak, RN and graduate of the Cadet Nursing Corp during WWll. My grandmother. My friend.
Elizabeth died from the progressions of Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease in a local nursing home. My heart broke. The level of care she needed was not available in my community. Her children and grandchildren were not able to stop working and provide the care she needed at home. Elizabeth’s spouse was aging himself. Our only alternative was long term care in a nursing home. Soon after my graduation, it became part of my new mission to create a better alternative for similar families. Fast forward to present day and I introduce you to:
- Sadie’s Place NY, LLC – the first social adult day service in my community. A pilot and model for our future. We offer safe and evidence-based care to seniors that need supervision. Opened in 2017 and survivor of a global pandemic. Best of the Hudson Valley, 2022. Entrepreneur as voted by readers.
- The Source NY - wellness studio created with the caregiver’s needs in mind. We offer massage, reiki, guided meditation, and other alternative modalities to help de-stress. Opened to the public in 2017.
Today, I am an entrepreneur, author, mentor and at my very essence a proud nurse. Each day brings new challenges regarding compliance, regulatory issues, staffing, client care, and more.
In my book, STARSEED, I share my untraditional beginnings and the various traumas I experienced, and the important steps that help me heal daily. As nurses we are invested in helping others, but often lose ourselves in the process. Lamar’s pearls of wisdom #1: Put yourself first! If I could impart one lesson in this moment it is this. You will never be able to bring your best to others if you don’t honor and protect yourself first. This translates to all aspects of you.
Partner, parent, and professional. You are better when you are your best.
Blessings,
